How long is the Brooklyn Bridge walk?

Walkers on the Brooklyn Bridge promenade heading toward a stone tower

The walk across the Brooklyn Bridge is short enough for almost anyone. Here is how far it is, how long it takes, and what it is in steps.

The short answer

The Brooklyn Bridge is 6,016 feet long including its approaches, according to New York City’s Department of Transportation, which is about 1.1 miles (1.8 km). At a normal walking pace of 5 km/h (3.1 mph), the crossing takes about 22 minutes, and at an easy stroll about 27. Allow longer for the crowds and the photos: the views are the point.

The walk in numbers

Length, including approaches 6,016 feet (1,834 m), about 1.1 miles
Main span between the towers 1,595.5 feet (486 m)
Time at a normal pace, 5 km/h about 22 minutes
Time at a stroll, 4 km/h about 27 minutes
Steps, adult of average height about 2,600
Completed 1883

Times are walking time only. Steps use the step length of an adult of average height, about 0.7 m.

Walking and cycling

The bridge has a pedestrian promenade. Since September 2021, cyclists have had their own two-way protected bike lane, which replaced one lane of car traffic.

Make it a longer walk

On its own, the bridge is about a quarter of a day’s 10,000 steps. Walked there and back, it is about 3.7 km (2.3 miles) and 5,200 steps, half of that target.

A goal for every walk

The hard part of walking more is not the walking. It is having a reason to go out today. reTrek gives your walks a finish line: pick a famous route, like the Camino de Santiago or the Inca Trail, and every walk moves you further along it, with a short film about the place waiting at each milestone. You stop looking for a spare moment to walk and start walking to reach the next milestone.
