How long does it take to walk 10,000 steps?

The short answer

About an hour and a half of walking. For an adult of average height, 10,000 steps is about 7 km (4.4 miles), and at the comfortable pace most adults walk, that takes 85 to 100 minutes. It takes longer as walking speed eases with age: about an hour and a half in your fifties, an hour and three quarters in your seventies, and around two hours after 80.

How long 10,000 steps takes, by age

At the average comfortable walking speed for each decade, measured across 51,248 healthy adults in a 2023 meta-analysis, for someone of average height covering 7 km:

Age Average speed 10,000 steps takes
18 to 29 4.9 km/h about 85 minutes
30 to 39 5.0 km/h about 85 minutes
40 to 49 4.9 km/h about 87 minutes
50 to 59 4.6 km/h about 1 hour 30 minutes
60 to 69 4.4 km/h about 1 hour 35 minutes
70 to 79 4.1 km/h about 1 hour 40 minutes
80+ 3.6 km/h about 2 hours

The speeds are combined averages for each decade, worked out from the study’s figures. Your own time depends on your height as much as your age: a taller person covers more ground with the same steps, so the same 10,000 steps take a little longer for them and a little less for someone shorter.

By step rate

Another way to work it out is by how many steps you take a minute. Researchers found about 100 steps a minute is where walking becomes moderate intensity for adults aged 21 to 40, and 130 where it becomes vigorous (Tudor-Locke and colleagues, 2019). At those rates:

Steps a minute 10,000 steps takes
100, a brisk walk 100 minutes
115 about 87 minutes
130, a very fast walk about 77 minutes

The two methods land in the same place: somewhere between an hour and a quarter and an hour and three quarters for most adults, with an hour and a half as the round answer.

Most people never walk it in one go

Ten thousand steps in one walk is unusual. Most people who reach it collect steps all day: getting up, cooking, shopping, the walk to the bus, a lunchtime loop, an evening walk. So the real question is usually how much walking you need to add to an ordinary day. If your phone says you average 5,000 steps now, the other 5,000 are about 45 minutes of walking, which is two short walks or one decent one. How many steps in 30 minutes of walking breaks that down.

Your own numbers

How many miles is 10,000 steps has the distance for every height, average walking speed by age has the speeds behind the table, and the steps to miles calculator works out your own time from your height and pace.

An hour and a half, counted toward somewhere

In reTrek, a 10,000-step day carries you about 7 km along a real route, from Lukla toward Everest Base Camp in a little over a week, with a short film about the place waiting at each milestone. The hour and a half is the same. It just goes somewhere now. Everest Base Camp is free. Start the walk.
