How many steps in a km?
About 1,420 for an adult 170 cm (5 ft 7 in) tall. A walking step is roughly 41% of your height, about 0.70 m at 170 cm, and 1,000 m divided by 0.70 m is 1,420. Someone 150 cm tall takes about 1,610, and someone 195 cm about 1,240. Every 5 cm in between is in the table above. A kilometre is 0.62 miles, so the steps in a km are always about 62% of the steps in a mile.
How to measure your own steps in a km
The height rule is an average, and your own step can be 10% longer or shorter. A running track settles it: the inside lane is 400 m, so two and a half laps is exactly a kilometre. Walk them at your normal pace and count every step, or count one lap and multiply by 2.5. An adult of average height takes about 570 steps a lap.
Steps for a longer distance
Multiply by the kilometres. For an adult of average height, 2 km is about 2,800 steps, 3 km 4,300, 4 km 5,700, 5 km 7,100, 6 km 8,500 and 10 km 14,200. Each has its own page with every height. Going the other way, 10,000 steps is about 7 km.
Every kilometre, counted toward somewhere
In reTrek the kilometres you walk become distance on a real trail. Pick a route, Everest Base Camp is free, and 5 km a day carries you from Lukla to Base Camp in about 12 days, with a short film about the place waiting at each milestone. reTrek reads the steps your phone already counts, so the walk itself does not change. What changes is that it is going somewhere.
Or take someone with you: walk the same route with a friend and pool your steps, or race each other to Base Camp.
