How many steps is 2 miles?

About 4,600 for an adult 5 ft 7 in (1.70 m) tall. Two miles is 3,219 m, and a walking step is roughly 41% of your height, about 0.70 m for that adult. The average American woman (according to the CDC), at 5 ft 3.5 in, takes about 4,800, and the average American man, just under 5 ft 9 in, about 4,400. Shorter legs, more steps: the table above runs from 4 ft 10 in to 6 ft 4 in.

How to count your own steps in 2 miles

The height rule is an average, and your own step can be 10% longer or shorter than it. To get your real number, walk one lap of a running track in the inside lane at your normal pace and count every step. That lap is 400 m, and eight of them make 3,200 m, within 1% of two miles, so your count for one lap times eight is your two-mile figure. An adult of average height takes about 570 steps a lap.

Count a second lap and take the average if the two differ. Carry your phone in your pocket while you do it, and you also learn how far its own count runs from yours.

Is 2 miles a day enough?

It is most of the way. Two miles is about 4,600 steps before the rest of the day adds anything, and the 2025 review of daily steps in The Lancet Public Health found most outcomes levelling off between 5,000 and 7,000 steps a day. A daily two-mile walk needs only a few thousand more from the rest of the day to reach that range. How many steps a day is good has the research in full.

Two miles a day, counted toward somewhere

In reTrek those 4,600 steps become distance on a real trail. Pick a route, Everest Base Camp is free, and two miles a day carries you from Lukla to Base Camp in about 18 days, with a short film about the place waiting at each milestone. Something to look forward to on the walk you already take, and progress you can see on the map every evening.

Or take someone with you: walk the same route with a friend and pool your steps, or race each other to Base Camp.
