How many steps is 3 miles?

About 6,900 for an adult 5 ft 7 in (1.70 m) tall. A walking step is roughly 41% of your height, so that adult covers about 0.70 m (2 ft 4 in) a step, and three miles, 4,828 m, takes 6,900 of them. The average American woman (according to the CDC), at 5 ft 3.5 in, needs about 7,200, and the average American man, just under 5 ft 9 in, about 6,600. Your own step can sit 10% either side of the figure for your height, so every number here is an “about”.

Is 3 miles the same as a 5k?

Nearly. A 5k is 3.11 miles, so it takes about 7,100 steps, roughly 200 more than three miles. That is why a parkrun walked end to end shows up as a 7,000-step morning, and why “3 miles” and “a 5k” get used as if they were the same walk. The 5k page has the race in miles, km and minutes.

Is walking 3 miles a day enough?

For most people, yes. The 2025 review of daily steps in The Lancet Public Health found most outcomes levelling off between 5,000 and 7,000 steps a day. Three miles is about 6,900 steps on its own, before an ordinary day adds anything, so a daily three-mile walk takes nearly anyone past the point where most of the benefit has arrived. More still helps, by a smaller margin. How many steps a day is good has the whole picture.

Three miles a day, counted toward somewhere

In reTrek those 6,900 steps become distance on a real trail. Pick a route, Everest Base Camp is free, and three miles a day carries you from Lukla to Base Camp in about 12 days, with a short film about the place waiting at each milestone. reTrek reads the steps your phone already counts, so the walk itself does not change. What changes is that it is going somewhere.

Or take someone with you: walk the same route with a friend and pool your steps, or race each other to Base Camp.
