How many miles is 18,000 steps?

About 7.9 miles, or 12.7 km, for an adult of average height. It is in the top tier the research uses, about two and a half hours on foot, and the question is what the extra time buys. Here is the answer.

How far is 18,000 steps?

18,000 steps is about 12.7 km, or 7.9 miles, for an adult of average height. A walking step is roughly 41% of your height, so someone 1.7 m tall covers about 0.70 m a step and 12.7 km in 18,000 of them. At 1.6 m it is 11.9 km (7.4 miles), at 1.9 m 14.2 km (8.8 miles), and a child of 1.2 m covers about 8.9 km (5.6 miles). Your own stride sits within about 10% of the figure for your height, so every number here is an “about”.

How long does it take to walk 18,000 steps?

About two and a half hours at a normal pace of 5 km/h (3.1 mph), walked in one go. A stroll at 4 km/h takes 3 h 10 min, a brisk walk at 6 km/h 2 h 7 min. At this distance it is usually one long walk plus the ordinary day, not something that accumulates on its own.

How many calories does 18,000 steps burn?

About 565 kcal for a 70 kg (154 lb) adult of average height at a normal pace, from roughly 445 kcal at 55 kg (121 lb) to 810 kcal at 100 kg (220 lb). Body weight decides most of it, and pace barely matters between 4 and 6 km/h on level ground. That is the walk’s own cost above sitting still. Some fitness trackers report the total including what you would have burned anyway, so their figure for the same walk runs about a third higher. The numbers come from a model of walking energy cost built on height, weight and speed, which tested within a few percent of measured values across body sizes.

Is 18,000 steps a day good?

Yes. In the step tiers used in research, 12,500 and up is “highly active”, the top tier, and 18,000 is comfortably inside it. It is well past the point where the studies find most of the benefit: a 2017 study of Glasgow postal workers found those averaging around 15,000 steps a day had normal waist sizes, blood fats and blood sugar, with no features of metabolic syndrome.

The larger picture is the same for any count above 10,000. The 2025 review in The Lancet Public Health found most outcomes levelling off between 5,000 and 7,000 steps, and a 2022 meta-analysis put the plateau at 8,000 to 10,000 for adults under 60. Beyond that, a 2023 meta-analysis of 226,889 people found risk still falling with every extra thousand steps and no ceiling. So 18,000 is better than 10,000, by a margin that is real and modest, and the cost is time: about two and a half hours on foot a day.

How to keep 18,000 going

Most of a day’s steps come from walks like this one.

18,000 steps is a deliberate walk on top of an ordinary day, most days, and deliberate walks are the ones that get skipped. What keeps people going, in the words of the ones who do, is something to look forward to on the walk, progress they can see, and someone who notices. Walk the same loop every evening and it stays a chore. Make it a route, count it toward somewhere, and the same loop becomes a chapter.

The same loop, as a route

That is what reTrek is built for. Pick a route, Everest Base Camp is free, and your steps stop being a number in a health app and start being distance along a real trail. 18,000 a day is about 12.7 km, so the walks you already take carry you from Lukla to Base Camp in about 5 days, and there is a short film about the place waiting at each milestone. Something to look forward to. Progress you can see on the map every evening.

Someone who notices is the third part. Walk the same route with a friend and pool your steps, or race them to Base Camp and find out which of you skips fewer evenings.
