How far is 35,000 steps?

35,000 steps is about 24.6 km, or 15.3 miles, for an adult of average height. A walking step is roughly 41% of your height, so someone 1.7 m tall covers about 0.70 m a step and 24.6 km in 35,000 of them. At 1.6 m it is 23.2 km (14.4 miles), at 1.9 m 27.5 km (17.1 miles), and a child of 1.2 m covers about 17.4 km (10.8 miles). Your own stride sits within about 10% of the figure for your height, so every number here is an “about”.

How long does it take to walk 35,000 steps?

About 5 hours at a normal pace of 5 km/h (3.1 mph), walked in one go. A stroll at 4 km/h takes 6 h 9 min, a brisk walk at 6 km/h 4 h 6 min. At this distance it is usually one long walk plus the ordinary day, not something that accumulates on its own.

How many calories does 35,000 steps burn?

About 1100 kcal for a 70 kg (154 lb) adult of average height at a normal pace, from roughly 865 kcal at 55 kg (121 lb) to 1570 kcal at 100 kg (220 lb). Body weight decides most of it, and pace barely matters between 4 and 6 km/h on level ground. That is the walk’s own cost above sitting still. Some fitness trackers report the total including what you would have burned anyway, so their figure for the same walk runs about a third higher. The numbers come from a model of walking energy cost built on height, weight and speed, which tested within a few percent of measured values across body sizes.

Is 35,000 steps a day too much?

For a day, no. For every day, it depends on the legs you bring. A 2023 meta-analysis of 226,889 people found risk of death falling with every extra thousand steps and no upper limit, so the studies have nothing against 35,000. In the step tiers used in research it is far inside “highly active”.

But 35,000 steps is 25 km, more than a half marathon, about 5 hours on foot, and the research on benefit stops well short of it. The 2025 review in The Lancet Public Health found most outcomes levelling off between 5,000 and 7,000 steps. A 2022 meta-analysis put the plateau at 8,000 to 10,000 for adults under 60. At 35,000 the questions are practical: time, feet, sleep and food. This is the daily distance of people who walk for a living or for a long journey, and they build up to it over weeks. Pilgrims on the Camino Frances cover 22 to 26 km a day, 31,000 to 37,000 steps, for 30 to 35 days, and 35,000 is about a pilgrim’s day.

What 35,000 steps a day is for

A walker in a dark jacket on an empty two-lane road through brown hills under low cloud

A long way, and a long time.

It is a walk with a destination. Nobody accumulates 25 km on errands. This is the count of a day out, a long commute chosen on purpose, or a walking holiday, and the way to keep it from being exhausting is to make it the thing you were going to do anyway. What keeps people going, in the words of the ones who do, is something to look forward to on the walk, progress they can see, and someone who notices.

The same distance, on a trail

That is what reTrek is built for. Pick a route, Everest Base Camp is free, and a long day on foot stops being a number and becomes distance along a real trail, with a short film about the place waiting at each milestone. 35,000 steps is about 25 km, so at that pace Lukla to Base Camp takes under three days, and the Camino Frances about 32 days. Something to look forward to. Progress you can see on the map every evening.

Someone who notices is the third part. Walk the same route with a friend and pool your steps, or race them to Base Camp and find out which of you skips fewer evenings.
